NMS Healthcare has been named a quality respiratory care provider under a new program aimed at making sure residents in long-term care facilities have access to respiratory care services provided by qualified respiratory therapists.

The American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) started the Quality Respiratory Care Recognition (QRCR) program in 2003 to help consumers make informed choices about their health care. The program initially enrolled hospitals that agreed to ensure patient safety by adhering to a strict set of criteria governing their respiratory care services. Home care organizations were added to the program a year later, and this year the Association is adding long-term care facilities, including skilled nursing facilities, long-term acute care hospitals, and other long-term care facilities.

Recognized organizations are listed on the AARC’S consumer web site, www.YourLungHealth.org.

Dozens of visitors to NMS Healthcare of Hagerstown on Tuesday evening raved about the spacious surroundings inside the facility's new 56-bed pulmonary-care wing.

NMS officials held a reception and cut a ribbon to celebrate next month's planned opening of the wing, part of a $14 million project that includes renovation work to other areas of the nursing home's campus near the corner of Marsh Pike and Air Park Road north of Hagerstown.

The new wing — connected to the existing 186-bed nursing home — features spacious patient rooms with large windows and bright colors, as well as wood flooring and modern decor throughout.

It prompted praise from numerous attendees, who included local health care officials, county leaders, invited guests and a representative from Maryland U.S. Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski's office. "This looks great," said one woman who stopped to talk to Domenic Borro, administrator of NMS Healthcare of Hagerstown, as they stood outside one of the new patient rooms. "I think people are really going to love it."
