NMS Healthcare provides evidence-based rehabilitation services to help the residents achieve their highest level of independence.

The clinical programs implemented by the rehabilitation team are specifically tailored to the needs of the resident which may include:

Aquatic Therapy

NMS Healthcare of Annapolis and Hagerstown are equipped with heated therapeutic pools. The warmth of the pool in itself helps reduce joint stiffness. The pools are also equipped with jets that are used for resistance exercises to strengthen weak muscles. Taking advantage of the unique physical properties of water, NMS Healthcare of Hagerstown features an underwater treadmill which is especially beneficial to those who cannot bear the full weight of the body, such as those who underwent hip or knee replacement, to get a headstart toward recovery.

Part of this program is to educate our residents to adopt a healthier lifestyle in able to reduce the risk of future heart problems.

In collaboration with our respiratory therapists, the pulmonary rehabilitation program focuses on residents with lung problems such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema and cystic fibrosis. Conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injury, Alzheimer's disease, and multiple sclerosis could cause swallowing problems which may cause pneumonia, weight loss and dehydration. After careful assessment, our speech-language pathologists creates an intervention plan that may include prescribing exercises, teaching strategies and positions for more effective swallowing, and recommends a specific food and liquid textures that are easier and safer to swallow.

Cognitive Therapy

Cognition, which includes attention, memory, and executive function, is essential to the performance of everyday tasks. Our team is specialized in caring for our residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementia with the ultimate goal of maximizing function and ability.
